France, Germany and the United Kingdom has started the process on Thursday to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.
The European nations triggered the sanctions process through a letter to the UN Security Council.
France and the UK also requested that the 15-member council hold closed consultations on Friday to discuss Iran’s noncompliance, according to a diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss still-private information.
This renewed resolve comes after a 12-day conflict with Israel in June which saw its atomic sites repeatedly bombed.
European nations have again targeted to freeze Iranian foreign assets, halt arms deals with Tehran and penalize any development of its ballistic missile program, among other measures, further squeezing the country’s reeling economy.
The mechanism, termed snapback by the Europe is negotiated into the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) with world powers, and designed to be veto-proof at the UN. There is brighter chance that it goes into effect.
According to European Diplomats, the move is meant to spark intensified diplomatic negotiations, an anticipated reversal on the part of Iran whose refusal to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) inspectors started the crisis.
“This measure does not signal the end of diplomacy: we are determined to make the most of the 30-day period that is now opening to engage in dialogue with Iran,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot wrote on the social media platform X.
IRAN decries injustice, accusing E3 of acting as ‘proxies’ of Israel
In response to the initiated snapback, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi decried the move as “unjustified, illegal, and lacking any legal basis” in a call with his European counterparts.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond appropriately to this unlawful and unwarranted measure,” he said, without elaborating.
Iranian International has reported that Acting Friday prayer Imam of Tehran, Mohammad Javad Haj Ali Akbari, Friday, accused Britain, France, and Germany of acting as “proxies” for Israeli interests after their move to trigger the UN snapback mechanism against Iran.

Calling the step “illegal, immoral, and purely political,” he said it was done under US and Israeli pressure.
“This decision is a symbolic act of desperation after the disgraceful failure of the US and Israel in the recent conflict,” he said during his sermon on Friday.
According to Iranian International, also, a senior aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader has criticized the activation of the UN snapback mechanism, saying it has no legal foundation and will only complicate the diplomatic landscape.
“The activation of snapback, which lacks legal grounds, will merely lead to a more complex diplomatic atmosphere,” Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to the Supreme Leader, wrote Friday on X.
He added that the move will not affect the Islamic Republic’s determination to preserve its independence and development.
