CEM REPORT, AVIATION | The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has taken a significant step to prioritize passenger safety by suspending the operations of Dana Air.
This decision, effective immediately, comes after a series of concerning incidents involving Dana Air flights, culminating in a recent runway excursion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
In a letter addressed to the NCAA, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Emmanuel Meribole, highlighted the Aviation Minister’s serious concerns regarding Dana Air. Meribole noted recent incidents involving the airline and emphasized the paramount importance of safety for Nigerian citizens and travelers.
Consequently, the Minister directed the NCAA to initiate an immediate suspension of Dana Air’s operations to facilitate a comprehensive audit.
Dana Air Recent Runway Excursion
The most recent incident sparking this suspension involved a Dana Air aircraft experiencing a runway excursion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is currently conducting an investigation into this event, and a preliminary report is awaited.
While the safety investigation unfolds, the NCAA has begun an in-house compliance assessment of the runway excursion, considering previous occurrences involving Dana Air aircraft. This proactive approach aims to identify any recurring trends that could pose a safety threat.
Addressing Safety and Financial Concerns
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, fully supports the NCAA’s actions. He emphasizes the need for swift measures to address potential safety and economic issues that might be contributing to these incidents.
Chris Najomo, Acting Director-General of the NCAA, outlined the reasons for the suspension in a letter to Dana Air. He cited Section 31 (7) of the Civil Aviation Act, 2022, as the legal basis for the suspension, which took effect on April 24, 2024, at 11:59 PM WAT.
Najomo further explained the two-pronged approach of the upcoming audit. A thorough safety audit will involve a re-inspection of Dana Air’s organization, procedures, personnel, and aircraft.
This inspection will adhere to the guidelines outlined in Part 1.3.3.3 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations. Additionally, a financial audit will be conducted to critically assess the airline’s financial health and ensure its capacity to maintain safe flight operations.
Impact on Passengers
This suspension will undoubtedly cause disruptions for passengers who have booked flights with Dana Air. The airline has confirmed it is processing refunds for affected flights. Passengers are advised to contact Dana Air directly for further information regarding their bookings.
