This year alone the industry has witnessed a significant rise in skilled professionals like licensed pilots over 554, aircraft maintenance engineers over 913, air traffic controllers, and cabin crew over 1700 according to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). This growth signifies a strong commitment from stakeholders to build a robust workforce capable of handling the demands of a burgeoning aviation sector.
A key achievement recently celebrated is the launch of a direct flight at an affordable rate by a Nigerian indigenous private airline, Air Peace, from Lagos to London Gatwick Airport. This accomplishment not only highlights the increasing competitiveness of Nigerian airlines but also marks a pivotal step towards expanding the global reach of the country’s aviation industry.
The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, led by Festus Keyamo, is playing a pivotal role in this aviation boom. Keyamo recently highlighted the government’s proactive approach in an interview with Arise News.
Keyamo revealed plans for a strategic partnership with Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturer, aimed at elevating the standards of air travel operations in Nigeria. Additionally, negotiations between Nigeria and Air Peace successfully secured permission for Nigerian private airlines to operate flights directly to London Gatwick Airport. “We understand the need for a comprehensive approach,” says Keyamo. “Our plan includes streamlining airport processes, facilitating aircraft leasing for Nigerian carriers, and establishing domestic Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities to reduce reliance on foreign resources.”
