……if innovation is in your DNA come to James Hope University….Prof. Olu Akinkugbe
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” This timeless assertion by renowned management thinker Peter Drucker perfectly captures the vision behind James Hope University (JHU). Conceived in 2021 following regulatory approval and commencing academic operations in 2023, the university has rapidly emerged as one of Nigeria’s most promising centres for postgraduate business education. Founded by Mr. Jim Ovia, CFR, Chairman and Founder of Zenith Bank Plc, James Hope University is not merely awarding degrees—it is developing visionary leaders, policy analysts and entrepreneurs capable of transforming Nigeria’s economy.
A recent documentary by CEM Television and Continental Economy Magazine (CEM) provided an opportunity to engage extensively with members of the university’s faculty, management and learning environment. The interactions revealed an institution driven by excellence, innovation and practical knowledge. Despite being only two years into academic operations, James Hope University is already making remarkable contributions to both the private and public sectors through its emphasis on experiential learning, critical thinking and leadership development.
At the heart of James Hope University is the prestigious James Hope Business School (JHBS), offering carefully designed postgraduate programmes that address the demands of today’s global economy. The university currently offers the Executive MBA (EMBA), Full-Time MBA, MSc Finance, MSc Fintech & Analytics, MSc Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and MSc Economic Development & Policy Analysis. The school is in partnership with many professional bodies in awarding 2 in 1 certificates. With the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Security and Investment, Certified Financial Analyst (CFA), Association of Enterprise Risk Management Professionals, etc. These programmes combine academic rigour with practical industry engagement, ensuring that graduates possess both the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s competitive business environment.
One striking observation during the CEM media tour was the university’s commitment to creating a complete educational experience beyond the classroom. James Hope University boasts one of the finest sports and fitness facilities among higher institutions in Africa, encouraging students to maintain healthy lifestyles before or after lectures. This deliberate investment in physical wellness reflects the institution’s understanding that leadership excellence requires both intellectual and physical development.
The university equally provides an outstanding academic environment through its modern library, equipped with extensive physical collections alongside advanced digital learning resources. Students benefit from serene classrooms, technology-enabled learning spaces, excellent networking opportunities and highly trained administrative and support staff, all working together to create an atmosphere conducive to learning, innovation and personal growth.
The conversations between the CEM media crew and members of the faculty left little doubt about why James Hope University is rapidly gaining recognition as a producer of exceptional leaders. The lecturers bring a wealth of international academic, research and industry experience into the classroom, exposing students to global best practices while addressing uniquely African economic and business challenges. Their passion for teaching and mentorship reinforces the university’s mission of producing graduates capable of driving sustainable development.
A defining milestone in the university’s journey came with the appointment of Professor Oluyele Akinwalie Akinkugbe as President and Vice-Chancellor in February 2026. His appointment represents a homecoming, having played a foundational role in establishing the university and its business school. With more than four decades of leadership spanning universities and institutions across Africa, Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, Prof. Akinkugbe brings exceptional global experience to James Hope University. His academic credentials include a doctorate in Applied Econometrics from the University of Ibadan, while his extensive policy advisory work has seen him collaborate with organisations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), African Development Bank (AfDB), UNDP, UNCTAD, UNIDO, CODESRIA and several other international development institutions.
Professor Akinkugbe’s leadership philosophy centres on academic excellence, institutional sustainability, global partnerships and impactful community engagement. Having taught, researched and held senior academic leadership positions in more than fourteen countries—including Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Cambodia and Rwanda—he brings to James Hope University an extraordinary blend of scholarship, policy expertise and transformational leadership. His vision is to deepen academic excellence, strengthen international collaborations, build resilient institutional systems and expand access to quality education for talented students across diverse backgrounds.
The university’s philosophy aligns with the changing landscape of higher education globally. Rather than focusing solely on certificate acquisition, James Hope University prioritises employability, innovation, entrepreneurship and measurable return on investment for its students. Through immersive experiential learning, industry engagement and technology-driven education, the university prepares graduates who are equipped not only to secure rewarding careers but also to create jobs, formulate sound economic policies and lead organisations with integrity and competence.
Within just two years of operation, James Hope University has demonstrated that age is no barrier to excellence. Built on the enduring values of integrity, innovation, academic distinction and industry relevance, the institution is steadily positioning itself as a catalyst for Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation. Guided by the visionary leadership of Founder Mr. Jim Ovia, CFR, and now under the globally respected stewardship of Professor Olu Akinkugbe, James Hope University is creating the future Peter Drucker envisioned—one where education shapes leaders, transforms institutions and builds a prosperous Nigeria for generations to come.
