CEM REPORT, GOVERNANCE | The North-West zone had the highest NIN registration and issued National Identity Numbers (NIN) in 2022 ahead of the other 5 geo-political zones.
Also, more men registered and have been issued national identity numbers (NIN) in 2022 than women in the 36 states of the Federation, FCT and the Diaspora.
Total registration and NIN issued stood at 22,492,748 in 2022, with 12,643,563 males and 9,849,185 females. The 36 states and FCT recorded 22, 237,022; while registrations in the diaspora were 255,726.
This is according to the recently released National Identity Registration Statistics by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The report detailed that 12,643,563 males and 9,849,185 females were registered and issued while the registrations and NIN issued to diaspora stood at 140,496 males and 115,230 females.
A state breakdown reveals that Kano, Lagos, Kaduna, Katsina and Ogun were the top five states with 2,444,224, 2,097,912, 1,256,479, 1,156,149 and 1,075,942 respectively.
While the least 5 states with registrations and issuance of identity numbers were Bayelsa (100,525), Ekiti (141,534), Ebonyi (165,375), Cross-River (268,904) and Kogi (308,681).
On zonal distribution, the North-West had the highest registrations and NIN issued with 7,207,695, followed by the South-West with 4,825,143. However, the South-East had the least registrations and NIN issued with 1,793,373.
The report details that in 2022, total registrations and NIN issued were 22,492,748, a decrease of 16.85% when compared to 27,052,148 in 2021.
The federal government has mandated every citizen to register and be included in the national database hence the mandatory linking of NIN to SIM cards.
