Ogun State 2026 proposed Budget: An Analysis

Ogun State is located in the Southwest area of  Nigeria. A hub of economic activities and natural resources with a population of over 5 million people. She recently commissioned  her  cargo airport known as Gateway International Cargo Airport that is expected to create jobs for about 25,000 men and women including Youths and Adults. The State is globally known for a particular fabric,  Adire which has become an attire for both the black and white People. It’s cultural activities can’t be undermined, the popular Ojude Oba Festival, Ake Arts and Book Festival which is  an annual literary and cultural event  for promoting African creativity and intellectual discourse.

Her economic indicators are not left out. A state  whose GDP was estimated to be around ₦5.03 trillion, ranking it 8th among Nigerian states in 2024. Highly endowed with mineral resources including limestone, clay and granites that  led  Lafarge and Dangote to establish cement factories in the State. The State is the major producer of cocoa and  casava. To give  a better life to  the people of  State, the Executive Governor of the State, His Excellency, Dapo Abiodun presented the 2026 budget of N1.668 trillion representing 68% increase from the 2025 budget of N1.054 trillion to the State Assembly on the 3rd of December, 2025.  The budget he  titled  Budget of Sustainable Legacy  is to focus on infrastructure development, education, healthcare and social inclusion.

The proposed  Capital Expenditure of  N1.044 trillion which represents 63% of the total budget.  signify the Governor’s determination to  Construct and Rehabilitate more roads and bridges. Asset Acquisition, Project Funding, Housing Development etc. The Recurrent Expenditure of  N624.76 billion  which is 37% of the total budget is for  Personnel Costs, Consolidated Revenue Charges, Public Debt Charges and Overhead Costs. Overhead cost in a state government budget refers to the expenses incurred by the government in running its day-to-day operations.  These costs are essential for the smooth functioning of government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs);  Electricity, water, and fuel costs for government buildings and facilities. Repairs and maintenance of government vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure. Travel allowances, vehicle maintenance, and transportation costs for government officials. Office Expenses;  Stationery, office supplies, and communication costs. Consultancy Services;  Fees paid to consultants and professionals for specialized services. The State’s fight against  mortality and bad health conditions wasn’t seen as a  play therefore, the health sector got allocation of N210.59 billion which is 13% of the total budget.

The budget which is aim to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and improve the quality of life for the Ogun State residents didn’t set aside Recreational, Cultural and Religion activities. The State government intends to fund the  budget with;  Internally Generated Revenue estimated to be N250 billion,  Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), 259.88 billion,  Federal Government Allocation, N554.81 billion,  Capital Receipts (internal and external loans and grants), N518.90 billion.

The Olumo Rock is in Ogun State, which attracts both local and international tourists for different activities.

The State is very conducive for investments.
