CEM REPORT, ECONOMY| In a move designed to boost economic participation and improve the lives of working Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu has greenlit the first phase of the Consumer Credit Scheme. This initiative, spearheaded by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), aims to make credit facilities more accessible for citizens.
In a press release issued by the President’s special advisor on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, outlined a strategic rollout plan for the scheme. The initial phase will prioritize civil servants, allowing them to leverage responsible borrowing to elevate their quality of life. This targeted approach facilitates program refinement before nationwide implementation.
“President Bola Tinubu has approved the takeoff of the first phase of the Consumer Credit Scheme.
“The Consumer Credit Scheme serves as a cornerstone for a modern economy. By enabling access to essential goods and services through responsible borrowing, the scheme empowers citizens to improve their quality of life.”
He elaborated on the potential benefits, including facilitating crucial purchases like homes, vehicles, and education. This, in turn, fosters social mobility and stimulates economic activity by boosting demand for goods and services.
He added that working Nigerians who are interested in obtaining consumer credit should visit credicorp.ng to register their interest.
“This initiative, in collaboration with financial institutions and cooperatives nationwide, aims to broaden consumer credit availability.
“Working Nigerians interested in receiving consumer credit can visit credicorp.ng to express interest. The deadline is May 15, 2024.
“The scheme will be rolled out in phases, starting with members of the civil service and cascading to members of the public,” he said.
What is the Consumer Credit Scheme?
The Consumer Credit Scheme (CCS) is a government-backed program designed to bridge the gap between working Nigerians and essential financial resources. By facilitating access to credit, the scheme empowers individuals to make crucial purchases like homes, vehicles, and educational opportunities. This, in turn, fosters social mobility and unlocks a path to a better quality of life.
Benefits of the Consumer Credit Scheme
Enhanced Access to Goods and Services: The CCS allows Nigerians to spread the cost of essential purchases over time, enabling them to invest in their well-being and aspirations.
Credit Score Building: Responsible repayment habits within the scheme contribute to the creation of a dependable credit score. This score acts as a form of “personal equity,” facilitating access to further credit opportunities in the future.
Economic Stimulation: Increased consumer spending due to the scheme fuels demand for goods and services, leading to potential job creation and economic growth.
Financial Responsibility: The scheme emphasizes responsible credit use, promoting financial literacy and fostering a culture of sound financial management.
How Does the Scheme Work?
CREDICORP, the driving force behind the CCS, focuses on three key areas to achieve its goals:
Strengthening Credit Reporting Systems: A robust credit reporting system is crucial for lenders to assess creditworthiness. CREDICORP aims to improve the infrastructure, ensuring every working Nigerian has a reliable credit score.
Credit Guarantees and Wholesale Lending: To incentivize financial institutions to participate, CREDICORP offers credit guarantees and wholesale lending opportunities. This encourages banks and other lenders to expand their consumer credit offerings.
Promoting Responsible Credit Use: Financial literacy is a cornerstone of the scheme. CREDICORP promotes responsible credit use, educating Nigerians on managing debt effectively and fostering a culture of financial responsibility.
Expressing Interest in the Scheme
Following President Tinubu’s directive, CREDICORP launched a dedicated online portal for Nigerians to express their interest in the Consumer Credit Scheme. This portal, accessible at credicorp.ng, serves as a central hub for connecting potential borrowers with participating financial institutions and cooperatives.
Phase Rollout and Eligibility
The Consumer Credit Scheme will be implemented in phases. The initial rollout prioritizes civil servants, with plans to expand eligibility to the broader public in subsequent stages. Working Nigerians interested in participating in the scheme can visit credicorp.ng to register their interest. It’s important to note that the deadline for applications during this first phase was May 15, 2024.
