IGP, Kayode Egbetokun reiterates POS Ban

CEM REPORT, FINANCE | In a move aimed at enhancing public trust and curbing alleged illicit activities, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its Point-of-Sale (POS) Ban (POS Ban) machines and other mobile money transaction devices within its stations and facilities nationwide. This announcement comes after reports of public concerns regarding the use of POS machines for potentially illegal transactions, often involving collusion between operators and certain police personnel.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, issued a statement through Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), highlighting the rationale behind the renewed ban. The statement acknowledged previous directives on the issue, but noted that certain commands and formations within the NPF had “continued to flout this regulation.” This disregard for existing regulations, coupled with public outcry, prompted the need to reiterate the ban.

Reason for POS Ban

The NPF emphasized the inherent risks associated with allowing POS machines and mobile money transactions within police facilities. These risks include:

Facilitation of illicit activities: The NPF expressed concerns that the presence of POS machines could potentially facilitate illegal activities within police stations.

By reiterating the ban, the NPF aims to safeguard the security and integrity of its operations, upholding public trust in the process.

Strict Enforcement and Consequences for Violation

The statement emphasized the seriousness with which the NPF views this issue. It warned that any violation of the ban would result in “severe sanctions” being imposed on the leadership of the affected commands and formations. This stern message underscores the NPF’s commitment to enforcing the ban and ensuring compliance from its personnel.

Accountability and Upholding the Law

The FPRO further emphasized the importance of individual accountability for both officers and POS operators. The statement explicitly stated that any individual found contravening the directive, whether a police officer or a POS operator, would face “appropriate disciplinary and criminal action” in accordance with existing laws and regulations. Additionally, the leadership of the affected command or formation will also be held accountable for any breaches that occur under their watch.

This renewed ban on POS machines within police stations signifies the NPF’s commitment to addressing public concerns and upholding the integrity of its operations. By taking a firm stance against potential illicit activities and enforcing strict regulations, the NPF seeks to rebuild public trust and ensure that its facilities remain safe and secure for all citizens.
