President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has prioritized key road infrastructure projects that will span across various geopolitical zones. This move is in a bid to set in motion a bold agenda aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector and bolstering economic resilience through strategic infrastructure development.
Following a high-level meeting with state governors, Tinubu approved several initiatives under the National Construction and Household Support Programme, signaling a significant shift towards sectoral growth and economic recovery.
Strengthening Agricultural Infrastructure
The Sokoto-Badagry Highway, cutting through six states including Sokoto, Niger, Oyo, and Lagos, stands out as a cornerstone project. This highway not only promises enhanced connectivity but also serves as a crucial lifeline for 216 agricultural communities, underscoring its pivotal role in food security and economic sustainability.
“The Sokoto-Badagry Highway corridor encompasses vital agricultural resources, including 58 dams and seven Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs), making it integral to our nation’s agricultural sustainability,” remarked Tinubu
The President also greenlit full counterpart financing for transformative railway projects. The Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway and the Ibadan-Abuja segment of the Lagos-Kano Standard-Gauge Railway are set to traverse multiple states, facilitating efficient transport of goods and materials critical for agricultural and industrial sectors across Rivers, Abia, Benue, Kaduna, and beyond.
Economic Relief and Support Measures
Underpinning these infrastructure developments are comprehensive economic relief measures. The National Construction and Household Support Programme includes a one-off allocation of ₦10 billion for state procurement of buses and the CNG uplift programme, aimed at enhancing transportation and energy efficiency.
Additionally, ₦50,000 uplift grants will be disbursed to 100,000 families per state over three months, providing immediate financial support amidst economic challenges. Deployment of ₦155 billion for the purchase and sale of assorted foodstuff to be distributed across the nation.
Agricultural Mechanization and Food Security
Tinubu reiterated the urgency of enhancing food production capabilities, emphasizing the role of mechanization, high-quality seedlings, and solar-powered irrigation systems in supporting farmers throughout the year. This commitment is crucial for meeting domestic food demands and potentially positioning Nigeria as a regional food export hub.
“We must coordinate efforts across all levels to achieve our food production targets and create sustainable livelihoods,” stated President Tinubu, highlighting the pivotal role of the National Economic Council (NEC) in driving agricultural reforms.
Implementation and Impact
As these ambitious initiatives take shape, stakeholders anticipate substantial economic impacts across various sectors. Enhanced infrastructure is expected to unlock economic potentials, create employment opportunities, and stimulate industrial growth, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
Tinubu called for coordinated efforts and timely implementation: “Our commitment to delivering tangible results is paramount. We must harness our resources effectively to transform our agricultural landscape and ensure prosperity for all Nigerians.”
“There is nothing we are doing that is more important than producing high-quality food for our people to consume, buy, and sell. We create jobs in the production of it. And that is before we generate wealth by exporting the excess. It is not beyond us to achieve this for Nigerians.
“How much support do you need from me and in what form? I am prepared to provide it. But we must achieve the result. We must deliver on our targets at all levels. Please report back following your consultations and submit to my office within seven days,” President Tinubu said.
