National building is a multifaceted endeavor that extends beyond infrastructure and economic policies. It hinges on the cultivation of a knowledgeable and skilled workforce, particularly among the younger generation. Recognizing this, SWIT amongst various organizations are stepping up to provide opportunities for students to explore diverse career paths and contribute to societal progress.
SWIT’s Role in Shaping Young Minds
The Society for Women in Taxation (SWIT), a prominent organization within the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CITN), recently hosted a forum for students in Lagos Education District IV. The event, themed “Exploring Taxation as a Dynamic Career Path,” aimed to broaden students’ horizons and encourage them to consider taxation as a viable career option.
Amos Oluwaloni, a seasoned tax professional, emphasized the critical role of taxation in national development. He explained that tax professionals play a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with tax regulations and maximizing revenue for governments.
“You can be a science or commercial student and still become a tax expert,” Oluwaloni noted. “The tax industry offers a diverse range of opportunities, from tax administration and consultancy to tax law and practice.”
Sandra Momah, the Lagos State coordinator of SWIT, further dispelled the myth that a specific academic background is required to pursue a career in taxation. She highlighted the diverse range of career paths available within the industry, including tax administration, tax consulting, tax practice, and tax law.
“You can study law or engineering and still be a tax professional,” Momah explained. “There are numerous opportunities for individuals from various academic backgrounds to excel in the field of taxation such as; tax administrator, tax consultant, tax practitioner, tax lawyers amongst others.”

Osinaike Olusegun Olawale, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District IV, commended the students’ performance and expressed confidence in their ability to excel at the statewide competition. He also acknowledged the dedication of teachers in preparing the students for the event.
“The competitors’ performances were brilliant and fantastic. We are proud of their achievements and believe they will represent the district with distinction at the statewide competition.”
On the future plans on education within the district, he stated that further workshops and seminars are in the works to future build on other aspects of the students. He stated that the state government has set plans in motion to keep teachers motivated for them to give their best to building education with the state.
Omoregie Omototola, a Director in the Ministry of Education, emphasized the event’s goal of enhancing students’ English language skills and preparing them for future academic challenges. She thanked the district management and teachers for their efforts in fostering a conducive learning environment.
Investing in the Future
The success of female students in the spelling bee competition underscores the importance of investing in the education of girls. Momah highlighted the need to provide girls with equal opportunities to reach their full potential.
SWIT remains committed to raising awareness about taxation and encouraging young people to pursue careers in the field. By organizing such events, the organization aims to equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills they need to contribute to the nation’s economic growth and development.
If You Ask Me
As Nigeria continues to strive for economic growth and social progress, the role of tax professionals in shaping the nation’s future is paramount. By empowering students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, SWIT is helping to build a brighter future for Nigeria.
