CEM REPORT, AVIATION | Nigeria’s aviation industry is experiencing exciting turbulence, but this time, it’s the good kind! The sector has witnessed a remarkable surge in recent times, buoyed by government committed to growth. This trajectory of development promises not only a vibrant aviation sector but also a significant boost to the country’s economy.
This year alone the industry has witnessed a significant rise in skilled professionals like licensed pilots over 554, aircraft maintenance engineers over 913, air traffic controllers, and cabin crew over 1700 according to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). This growth signifies a strong commitment from stakeholders to build a robust workforce capable of handling the demands of a burgeoning aviation sector.
A key achievement recently celebrated is the launch of a direct flight at an affordable rate by a Nigerian indigenous private airline, Air Peace, from Lagos to London Gatwick Airport. This accomplishment not only highlights the increasing competitiveness of Nigerian airlines but also marks a pivotal step towards expanding the global reach of the country’s aviation industry.
The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, led by Festus Keyamo, is playing a pivotal role in this aviation boom. Keyamo recently highlighted the government’s proactive approach in an interview with Arise News.
Keyamo revealed plans for a strategic partnership with Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturer, aimed at elevating the standards of air travel operations in Nigeria. Additionally, negotiations between Nigeria and Air Peace successfully secured permission for Nigerian private airlines to operate flights directly to London Gatwick Airport. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing safety, efficiency, and technological advancements within the sector.
“We are committed to creating a thriving aviation industry that prioritizes safety, efficiency, and technological advancements,” stated Keyamo. “Our strategic partnerships with industry leaders like Airbus will allow us to elevate the standards of air travel in Nigeria.”
A Multifaceted Approach to Address Aviation Challenges
Despite the positive trajectory, Keyamo acknowledges existing challenges. Lengthy airport processing times, limited internet access, and unequal opportunities for Nigerian airlines in aircraft leasing are just a few of the concerns being addressed.

“We understand the need for a comprehensive approach,” says Keyamo. “Our plan includes streamlining airport processes, facilitating aircraft leasing for Nigerian carriers, and establishing domestic Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities to reduce reliance on foreign resources.”
Investing in the Future
The government’s commitment extends beyond immediate challenges. Strategic partnerships with major aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and collaborations with top consultants for airport redesign showcase a long-term vision for the industry.
Excessive bureaucracy, unrestrained cancellations, and delays by airlines without consequences, as well as the lack of basic amenities at airports, further underscored the need for comprehensive reforms.
Additionally, strategic partnerships with major aircraft manufacturers like Boeing, coupled with engagement with top consultants to redesign Nigerian airports, demonstrate the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and efficiency within the aviation sector.
Industry Experts Look to the Future with Optimism
Industry stakeholders and experts believe that the strategic implementation of policies outlined by the Minister has the potential to double the workforce, spur the establishment of new businesses, and significantly contribute to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This optimistic outlook reflects the transformative impact that a thriving aviation industry can have on the country’s economy, creating job opportunities and driving sustainable growth.
Looking Ahead:
With a focus on customer experience, fostering a competitive environment, and addressing infrastructural shortcomings, the Nigerian aviation industry is poised for significant growth. By harnessing the industry’s potential, Nigeria can establish itself as a key player in global aviation, connecting its people and businesses to the world with ease. The skies above Nigeria are truly soaring, and the future looks bright for the nation’s aviation industry.
