In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The decision, which was taken by a significant majority of lawmakers, has sent shockwaves through the state.

Allegations of Financial Misconduct

The impeachment followed mounting pressure from the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, which accused the Assembly of financial impropriety. The group alleged that the Assembly, under Obasa’s leadership, had spent a staggering N17 billion on constructing the lawmakers’ building gate and a further N200 million on its recent Thanksgiving service.

Obasa’s removal, executed while he was away in the United States, was met with widespread jubilation among Assembly staff and observers.

A Vote of No Confidence

Lawmakers, reconvening on Monday, voted to remove Obasa from office, citing these allegations and other instances of alleged financial misconduct.

“Change is inevitable,” declared Abiodun Tobun, a member of the Assembly, addressing the media after the impeachment. “The members of this House, in exercising our constitutional right to regulate our proceedings, unanimously decided that we had endured enough under the leadership of the Speaker.”

“This action was not taken lightly,” Tobun emphasized. “We owe Lagosians a duty to ensure that this House remains a beacon of integrity and progress.”

According to Tobun, all principal positions and standing committees were dissolved, signalling a fresh start for the legislative arm.

Relief Among Assembly Staff

The impeachment of Obasa was met with widespread relief among Assembly staff, many of whom had complained about his alleged high-handedness and disregard for their welfare.

“We are happy with the development. This is a breath of fresh air. We hope this new leadership will bring about positive changes and improve our working conditions,” a staff said according to Guardian report.

Obasa Denies Allegations

Prior to his impeachment, Speaker Obasa vehemently denied the allegations, dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated.

“It is so funny. How much is the allocation of the Assembly in a whole year that we would decide to spend N17 billion on a gate?” questioned Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker. “They even claimed that we expended N200 million on a thanksgiving service that did not hold.”

House Maintains Integrity

The Assembly, through its spokesperson, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, also refuted the allegations, emphasizing the House’s commitment to integrity and transparency.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly does not have any such funds,” Ogundipe stated. “The Assembly does not embark on constituency projects.”

If You Ask Me: A New Chapter for the Lagos Assembly

The impeachment of Speaker Obasa marks a significant turning point for the Lagos State House of Assembly. The new leadership will face the challenge of restoring public trust and ensuring the Assembly operates with the highest levels of accountability and transparency.

The events of the past week have underscored the importance of good governance and the need for robust oversight mechanisms within all branches of government.
