Dangote Refinery to Receive 12 Million Barrels of Crude Oil from Federal Government

0 7

In a significant development for Nigeria’s energy sector, the Federal Government is poised to supply 12 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Refinery in October. This strategic move is expected to bolster domestic fuel production, reduce reliance on imports, and alleviate the persistent fuel scarcity that has plagued the country.

According to Aliko Dangote, the billionaire businessman and CEO of Dangote Group, during an interview with Bloomberg TV on Monday, the crude oil supply is part of a mutually beneficial agreement between the government and his company. This arrangement falls under the broader Crude Oil for Naira deal, which aims to stimulate the Nigerian economy and ensure energy security.

“The kind of agreement that we are expecting from the federal government is to have a very robust agreement while first of all, we have energy security, where there won’t be queues,” Dangote stated. He explained that the government’s commitment to providing crude oil will enable the refinery to produce petrol, diesel, and jet fuel for the domestic market.

The 12 million barrels of crude oil, equivalent to approximately 390,000 barrels per day, will be refined at the Dangote Refinery. The refined products will be sold both domestically and internationally, with any excess being exported. Dangote emphasized the positive impact this initiative will have on the Nigerian economy, particularly in terms of reducing fuel costs and creating jobs.

“The federal government will provide for us crude oil. Already, we have agreed that, for example, in October, they are going to give us 12 million barrels which is averagely about 390,000 barrels a day which will refine and sell for both gasoline, diesels and aviation fuels. And if there is any excess, we will export,”

One of the most significant benefits of the government’s crude oil supply is the expected increase in the number of operational filling stations across Nigeria. Dangote noted that between 50 and 60 percent of non-functional filling stations are likely to resume operations as a result of the increased fuel availability. This will not only alleviate the inconvenience caused by fuel scarcity but also boost economic activity in local communities.

Furthermore, the agreement with the government will eliminate the need to import fuel from neighboring countries, such as Togo and Benin. This will significantly reduce transportation costs and associated demurrage fees, saving the country millions of dollars. Dangote estimated that Nigeria could save over $1 billion in demurrage payments alone.

The government’s decision to supply crude oil to Dangote Refinery aligns with its broader strategy to promote domestic refining and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels. By supporting the growth of the refining industry, Nigeria can enhance its energy security, create jobs, and generate revenue.

While the announcement of the crude oil supply is undoubtedly positive news for Nigeria, it is important to note that challenges remain. The successful implementation of the agreement will depend on factors such as the timely delivery of crude oil, the efficient operation of the refinery, and the distribution of refined products to consumers.

The Federal Government’s decision to supply 12 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Refinery marks a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges. By boosting domestic fuel production, reducing reliance on imports, and improving fuel distribution, this initiative has the potential to alleviate the suffering of millions of Nigerians and contribute to the country’s economic development.
