This enhanced ID goes far beyond simple identification, offering a range of functionalities that will streamline financial transactions, simplify access to social services, and empower citizens.
The functionalities of the new NIC extend far beyond financial transactions. The card will be instrumental in delivering various social service programs offered by the Federal Government. With a single card, Nigerians can seamlessly access essential services, eliminating the need for multiple documents and streamlining administrative processes. This not only enhances convenience for citizens but also improves efficiency in the delivery of social programs.
The revamped NIC is the product of a collaborative effort between the NIMC, the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) via AFRIGOPAY Financial Services. This powerful partnership leverages AFRIGOPAY’s AfriGO card scheme, a domestic debit card solution designed specifically for Nigerian transactions.
National ID Card to Fostering Financial Inclusion and Citizen Engagement
Prior to this development, Nigeria, like many developing nations, grapples with a significant unbanked population. The new NIC, with its debit and prepaid card capabilities, seeks to bridge this gap. As NIMC clarifies, “the card will also serve as a debit and prepaid card catering to both banked and unbanked individuals.” This empowers those without traditional bank accounts to participate in the formal financial system, facilitating everyday transactions and potentially opening doors to financial products like loans and savings accounts.

Understandably, concerns regarding data privacy and security are paramount. NIMC has proactively addressed these concerns, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding user information. The statement assures Nigerians that “the card is equipped with security features designed to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of user information such as offline capability enabling transactions in areas with limited network coverage.”
Additional Features
The new NIC boasts a range of additional features that enhance its utility. The card incorporates a Machine-readable Zone (MRZ) containing e-passport information, allowing for smoother travel experiences. It also includes the ID issuance date and a chip that can store additional personal data like travel information, health insurance details, and other relevant details for identification and verification purposes.
Eligibility and Obtaining the New NIC
Only Nigerian citizens and legal residents with a National Identification Number (NIN) are eligible to apply for the new card. Applications can be submitted at any commercial bank branch, online portals through banks’ web and mobile applications, designated centers, or NIMC offices nationwide. The card will be valid for five years from the date of issuance.
