CEM REPORT, ENTERTAINMENT | Nigeria’s entertainment industry is experiencing a golden age. A recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed a staggering 27.46% growth in the sector’s value over the past three years.
This translates to a rise from ₦1.55 trillion in 2020 to a whopping ₦1.97 trillion in 2023. This growth is driven by a confluence of factors, including rising domestic and international interest in Nigerian content, particularly music and film.
The report by the NBS highlights that motion pictures, sound recording, and music production are the heavyweights of the industry, contributing a significant 82.16% (₦1.62 trillion) to its overall value. This figure encompasses revenue generated from movie and music production, including sales, TV rights, royalties, and fees.
Investment Influx into Nigerian Entertainment Industry
Several factors are propelling the Nigerian entertainment industry forward. Increased investments have played a crucial role. Global streaming giant Netflix, for instance, announced a staggering $23 million investment in the Nigerian film industry over the past seven years. This investment has supported the creation of over 5,140 jobs and resulted in over 250 locally licensed titles.
Cinema & Streaming Surge
The revival of cinema culture in Nigeria is another positive development. Between 2021 and 2023, the Nigerian box office witnessed a cumulative revenue of ₦19 billion. This trend is further bolstered by data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, which reveals a 50% year-on-year increase in revenue for January 2024.

The story is similar in the music industry. Streaming platforms like Spotify have seen a remarkable 284% surge in demand for Nigerian music. This growth is further supported by a report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which revealed a 24.7% increase in music revenue across Sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, driven largely by a surge in paid streaming subscriptions.
Challenges & The Road Ahead
While Nigerian content is flourishing, a significant portion of the revenue generated might be leaving the country due to the dominance of foreign companies managing marketing and distribution.
While challenges exist, the future of Nigeria’s entertainment industry looks incredibly bright. A report by the Nigerian Entertainment Conference projects the industry to reach a staggering $14.82 billion in revenue by 2025. With continued investment, innovation, and a focus on building a robust domestic ecosystem, Nigeria’s entertainment industry has the potential to become a global powerhouse, captivating audiences worldwide with its unique blend of music, film, and storytelling.
