Sanwo-Olu Unveils Palliatives to Ease Economic Hardship

CEM REPORT, AGROFOOD | In response to the prevailing economic difficulties exacerbated by recent federal government policies, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled a series of palliatives aimed at cushioning the impact on residents. During a media interactive session tagged “Sanwo Speaks,” the governor outlined various interventions to alleviate the harsh economic realities faced by Lagosians.

Sanwo-Olu Reduces working Hours and Transport Subsidies

Sanwo-Olu announced a reduction in working hours for civil servants, with Grade Level 1-14 employees now scheduled to work three days a week, while Grade Level 15-17 staff will work four days. Additionally, the government reintroduced a 25% transport rebate and subsidy on movements within government-owned transport systems to ease the burden of commuting expenses.

Palliatives Across Various Sectors

The governor detailed a comprehensive package of interventions spanning multiple sectors. These include the prompt payment of pensioners’ entitlements, the re-introduction of Sunday Markets offering subsidized goods, and subsidies on essential medications. Furthermore, certain registration requirements in public schools, such as the demand for tax clearance certificates, have been suspended to facilitate the enrollment of out-of-school children.

Food Assistance and Healthcare Initiatives

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the government’s commitment to providing food aid to vulnerable households, with plans to distribute combo food bags to over 3,000 households. Additionally, the procurement of 100 trailers of rice and other food items aims to support the less privileged. In the healthcare sector, the governor announced free child deliveries at all 31 general hospitals across the state and the commencement of free health missions twice a week in each of the six health districts.

Infrastructure Development and Future Plans

While addressing immediate economic challenges, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the THEMES plus development agenda, emphasizing upcoming infrastructure projects such as the 4th Mainland Bridge and the Redline Rail System. He also highlighted plans to improve electricity supply in the state pending the passage of the Electricity Bill by the House of Assembly.

Call for Cooperation and Continued Peace

In conclusion, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to residents for their support and urged continued cooperation in achieving a greater Lagos. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity across ethnic, tribal, and religious lines, underscoring the government’s dedication to integrated urban transportation systems and holistic sectoral development.
