CEM REPORT, TRANSPORTATION | Lagos State has announced a significant progress in its commitment to sustainable transportation by securing a €410 million funding for the Omi Eko project.

This ambitious initiative, announced at the 28th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, UAE, aims to revolutionize public transportation in Lagos by developing a mass public inland waterways transport (IWT) system using electric ferries (e-ferries).

Omi Eko Funding Parties

The project’s funding will be a collaboration between several entities, including an AFD loan of €130 million, an EIB loan of €170 million, a €60 million grant from the European Union, and the remaining amount provided by the Lagos State government. This demonstrates a strong international commitment to supporting Lagos’ innovative and environmentally friendly transportation vision.

The project’s scope extends far beyond simply introducing e-ferries. It encompasses the development of 15 ferry routes across the Lagos lagoon, encompassing 140 kilometers of IWT network. This network will be marked and dredged to ensure safe and efficient navigation. Additionally, 25 ferry terminals and jetties will be upgraded to accommodate the increased passenger volume.

The acquisition of 75 electric-powered ferries is another key aspect of the project. These vessels will be equipped with modern technology and designed to provide a comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers.

Omi Eko Project Sustainability

To ensure sustainable operation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the project will feature charging stations at pontoons powered by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) supplied by solar PV panels. This innovative solution will be further supported by the grid and a CNG backup generator, maximizing energy efficiency and reliability.

The Omi Eko project is not just about technology and infrastructure. It also includes equipment for routine maintenance, a dedicated Control Center for the IWT network, and associated systems like ticketing. This ensures that the project is not only well-equipped but also managed efficiently for long-term success.

Implication

The implementation of the Omi Eko project will be overseen by the Lagos State Waterways Authority, leveraging its expertise and experience in managing waterways transportation within the state. This ensures that the project is in capable hands and will be delivered according to the highest standards.

The Omi Eko project is a key component of the Lagos State Climate Action Plan 2020-2025, aiming to decarbonize public transportation and contribute to a greener future. By shifting towards electric ferries, the project is projected to achieve an impressive reduction of 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This significantly contributes to Lagos’ efforts to combat climate change and improve air quality for its citizens.

Comment

The Omi Eko project represents a significant step forward for sustainable transportation in Lagos. It has the potential to revolutionize public transportation by offering a cleaner, more efficient, and more accessible option for commuters. This project is not only beneficial for Lagos but also sets an example for other cities around the world to follow in their journey towards greener and more sustainable urban development.
