CEM REPORT | Nigeria inflation rate currently stands at 17.71% and no presidential candidate has said a word in this regard.
With the #2023Elections on the horizon all gears are being put in place to crown Nigeria’s next pilot for the next four years. As several issues plague the country, presidential flag bearers have seized the stage to share with the electorate plans to combat the diverse issues plaguing the country.
However no candidate has said a word regarding the double digit inflation rate.
A report publish by Nairametrics confirms that the frontline presidential candidates have remained silent on the issue of inflation despite being at the forefront of most conversations relating to the state of the Nigerian economy.
Furthermore, looking at the social media handles of these candidates (twitter) — Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Ahmed Tinubu, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Omoyele Sowore, there have been no mention of inflation as Nigeria continues to suffer and loose out of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Former Governor of Anambra State and flage bearer of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, tweeted he was visiting Egypt for 3-days on a study of its education, planning, power and finance sectors
“I just departed for Egypt on a 3-day visit as part of my detailed study of comparable countries to Nigeria. In Egypt, I am expected to understudy, among others, the Egyptian Power Sector, Education, Planning and Finance Sectors.”
Meanwhile, former vice-president and flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar raised his voice over the collapse of the national grid.
“The darkness that has enveloped the nation in the last couple of days with the collapse of the national grid is a metaphor for the collapsing state of our nation: collapsing unity, collapsing security, collapsing economy, collapsing education, collapsing well-being and collapsing value of human life and dignity.”
Furthermore, national leader and flag bearer of the ruling All Programmes Congress (PDP), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has made no comment in regard to any national issue. While many speculates he is holding his horses for the peak of the election, others say he is crippled to speak as it will put him at loggerhead considering he is running under the ruling party.
On the hand, presidential aspirant under the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore has been quite vocal over a number of issues, especially on education and the sustained strike action by university lecturers, that has kept Nigerian students at home for over four months. In a tweet he said:
“For 123 days now Nigerian University teachers have been on strike, also Nigerian students in Colleges of Education have been thrown into the streets, their teachers too are on strike. The @MBuhari is enjoying the prolonged strike, students are suffering and parents are agonizing.
There are over 1.5 million students whose future is at stake, and no one seems to care. I lived through an era when the government was afraid of Nigerian students but today students are afraid of the govt, they’re scared to exercise their rights to have a future,”
Similarly with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of NNPP, as he is yet to comment on Nigeria’s rising inflation rate.
