Active telephony subscribers in the Nigerian Telecommunication industry has grown by 1.04% to 197,499,028 in January 2022 from 195,463,898 in January 2022, data from the Nigerian Communication Commission has shown.
On Year-on-year basis, the January 2022 subscriber figure is 1.36% lower than the 200,213,994 recorded in January 2021.

The data also shows that teledensity equally grew (month-on-month) from 102.40% in December 2021 to 103.46% in January 2022. Meanwhile, this is a reduction (Year-on-year) from the 104.89% recorded in January 2021.
In the same manner, teledensity was lowest in May 2021 within the last 12 months while the January figure was the highest recorded within the period.
Teledensity is defined as the number of active telephone connections per one hundred (100) inhabitants living within an area and is expressed as a percentage figure.

MTN has continued to have the highest of the subscribers in the industry with 74,730,738 out of the total of 197,499,028 representing 37.90%. Globacom has maintained its second position with 54,941,362 representing 27.87%.
Airtel follows Globacom closely with 54,635,863 representing 27.71% while 9mobile comel far behind with 12,844,810 representing 6.52%
Internet subscribers has also grown according to the January 2022 data to 143,564,481 from 141,971,560 in December 2021 with Mobile (GSM) leading with 143,205,516.
NCC also posted that the telecommunication industry contributed 12.61% to the Nation’s gross domestic product in the 4th quarter of 2021
